| There are many types of joint disorders which can affect the Temporo-Mandibular (Jaw) Joint. These range from various types of internal derangement through to myofascial pain disorder and different arthritic diseases.
The typical symptoms of TMJ problems include pain, locking, clicking, and crepitus. Ultimately these problems can lead to a reduction in mobility and function of the joint.
The underlying pathology of TMJ pain can be associated with derangement of the cartilage disc within the joint space, alteration in muscle and nerve co-ordination outside of the joint, or a combination of both. The majority of patients who seek treatment for TMJ pain do not need surgery, but can benefit from a wide range of therapies.   |
